In this article, we’ll go over the ingredients you’ll need and the steps you’ll need to follow to make Cuban Flan.

What is Cuban Flan?

Cuban Flan is a traditional Cuban dessert made with sweetened condensed milk, milk, eggs, and vanilla. It is a creamy and sweet custard topped with a caramel sauce. The caramel sauce is made from sugar and is used to coat the bottom of the pan before the flan is poured in.

How to Make Cuban Flan

Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make Cuban Flan:

  • 1 cup of sugar, for the caramel sauce
  • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a small saucepan, place the sugar over medium heat and let it melt and caramelize. This will take 5-10 minutes and the sugar should take on a golden brown color.
  3. Once the sugar is caramelized, pour it into an 8-inch round cake pan and tilt the pan so that the caramel sauce evenly covers the bottom and about an inch up the sides.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  5. Pour the mixture into the cake pan with the caramel sauce.
  6. Place the cake pan in a larger baking dish and fill the larger dish with water so that it comes halfway up the sides of the cake pan.
  7. Cover the larger baking dish with aluminum foil and poke a few holes in it to allow steam to escape.
  8. Bake for 1 hour or until the flan is set. You can test it by inserting a knife into the center of the flan. If it comes out clean, the flan is ready.
  9. Once the flan is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool to room temperature.
  10. Once cooled, place the cake pan in the refrigerator to chill for at least 2 hours.
  11. To serve, run a knife around the edge of the flan to loosen it from the pan and then invert the pan onto a serving platter. The caramel sauce should run down the sides of the flan.
  12. Slice the flan and serve it cold.
